A teenaged patient of mine came to see me with her mother a few months ago, complaining of irregular periods and weight gain. Her labs came back consistent with the diagnosis of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and I coordinated a time for us to meet with one of the endocrinologists here at CHCR. The specialist confirmed my diagnosis and we took the time to explain her condition and answer all of her questions. Together we discussed maintaining a healthy weight as one of the treatment options to reduce symptoms of PCOS. Whenever I talk about healthy weight management with my patients, I recommend eating more fruits and vegetables, eliminating sugary drinks, and exercising daily. To ensure she was getting the support she needed, I referred my patient to one of the nutritionists at CHCR. When my patient came back for her follow-up appointment a few months later she had lost weight and was having regular periods again. Building healthy habits allowed her to manage her symptoms and she was so happy to be able to see the results in her own body.
