A woman experiencing homelessness was referred to us by a shelter for help during her pregnancy. Without housing, employment, and a support system she was struggling to connect with her pregnancy. As her Doula I was able to link her to financial support, job opportunities, and an immigration lawyer. We spent many hours together in my office just talking. Knowing that someone was there for her, having a place to go when she had questions or needed resources, meant a lot. With my support she was able to face many of the challenges in her life, gaining confidence along the way. I was the only person with her throughout her pregnancy and during childbirth and I got to watch as her fear melted away the first time she held her baby. At CHCR we don’t really have a list of things we do and don’t do. If the patient has a need, we do our best to help them meet it. We do the leg work ourselves where we can or we connect them with another organization that can help.
