A sixteen year old came to CHCR with her mother seeking a pregnancy termination. After an ultrasound she was surprised to find out that she was already in her second trimester, too far along in the pregnancy to terminate. The OBGYN called me in immediately and I met with my new patient who was scared and anxious about carrying out her pregnancy, unable to look at the ultrasound. In the months to come my patient attended all of her prenatal appointments, enrolled in our Doula program and participated in our classes including Childbirth Education, Breastfeeding, and Safe Sleep. I encouraged her that pregnancy does not need to come in the way of your goals. She is currently holding and breastfeeding her baby, learning about newborn care as she continues to attend high school. By providing access to education and resources throughout her pregnancy I was able to help her build confidence in her abilities. The support you get during and after your pregnancy is so important. Having someone to keep you grounded can go a long way.
